State Tournament and Three Rivers Classic

Here are the details on two great archery events coming up this Spring.  Both events you will need to register and pay for individually, as these are outside the “normal” tournaments that the club arranges.

First up is the Three Rivers Archery Classic, Saturday March 16th at Crowfoot.  This is open to all archers and adults. The cost is $12 per shooter, or $25 per family of 3 or more.  This is a great chance for parents to shoot with their kids!

AWARDS:

  • FITA 600 round – 3 places in each division (male, female, recurve, compound).
  • JOAD Indoor – 3 places in each merit class (recurve, compound). Genders
combined.  (Note this is awarded by MERIT class, not by age).

Details here:  Three Rivers Archery Classic

Then our season finale event, the 49th Annual Pennsylvania J.O.A.D. State Indoor Championship, Saturday April 6th at the State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg.

State JOAD Tournament Registration

State JOAD Tournament T-shirt Order Form

We are working on getting a block of rooms reserved for Falcon JOAD at a nearby hotel, so more details about that will be forthcoming.  This tournament is held in conjunction with the PSAA State Indoor Championship, so there is an opportunity for adults or JOAD archers to shoot that, too.  Details on the PSAA website.

Pictures Jan 14th

Monday practices begin this week.  They will run roughly from 6:30 to 8:00, but we understand that weekday schedules can be rough, so just do your best.  Do contact Mrs. Brown if you can’t make practice at all.

On January 14th we will have a photographer there to take team and individual pictures.  So:

  • Wear your uniform!
  • Try to be on time at 6:30.
  • PLEASE let us know if you won’t be there.
  • Picture order forms will be available this week at practice.
  • If you are getting individual photos, bring CLEAN SHOES with you to practice.  That way you don’t track mud onto his backdrop.

Tournament Reminders

Time for our yearly update on tournament requirements and etiquette!  Good luck to all our archers this weekend at Beaver Valley Archers.

Things to Remember for Tournaments:

  1. Wear black pants and your team shirt. If you run into an “emergency”, you can come dressed differently, just be sure to not wear camo or old jeans.
  2. Arrive 30-45 minutes prior to shooting time.
    • You need time to check-in, put equipment together, & listen to announcements (announcements are typically 5-10 minutes prior to start of shooting).
  3. Come prepared
    • Be sure you have all of your equipment and enough arrows (in your quiver, not your case).
      • 3 arrows are shot at a time, but you need to have extras in case of damage to, or loss of, vanes or nocks (4 arrows is a minimum; 6 or more is best).
      • ALL of an archer’s arrows MUST match and have their initials on the shafts!
    • Keep a pencil in your quiver!
  4. Upon arrival, check in at the registration desk and put your equipment together.
    • You are to verify your merit class, age class, equipment, gender, target type/size.
    • Sometimes merit classes change often. If you jumped ANYTIME before the tournament (including at the last tournament) be sure to correct it at check-in.
    • If you are given your scorecard at the registration desk, you are to place it at the target.
  5. Scoring:
    • NEVER mark or touch arrows or the target before they are ALL called and recorded!
    • No less than 3 archers may score together, typical group size is 4 archers.
    • Double scoring is always used.
    • Archers decide who calls, who scores, and who observes.
    • Make sure everyone is clear on whether each archer is scoring inner or outer 10 rings.
    • Do NOT copy scores! i.e. – scorekeepers must do their own addition.
    • Check scores after every end, before arrows are pulled (even if the other scorekeeper doesn’t want to do this, it is very important, and is a rule – insist on doing it).
    • Mark your arrows!
  6. Line etiquette:
    • Step to the line within the allotted time (10 seconds)/
    • If you are late to the line, do not step to line if archer facing you is at full draw.
    • Take care not to bump those around you on the line.
    • Do NOT leave the line if a shooter immediately on either side of you is at full draw.
  7. Verbal communication and coaching on the line is NOT permitted.
Communication must occur behind the wait line while your line is not shooting.
  8. If you are unable to shoot an arrow/end due to an equipment issue, notify a coach and/or line judge. (A line judge MUST be told – a coach can do this for you – BEFORE you miss your time to shoot).  If you are on the line, raise your hand to indicate a problem. The line judge will let you know to step off the line and seek help.
  9. At completion of shooting, give both scorecards to the host club’s representative. They will return one of them to you.  Keep it for your records, but we will receive the scores from the host club in a few days.
  10. Any questions or problems, ask a coach or line judge.

Jobs and Food for the Falcon’s Tournament

Sign-up sheets are now posted for jobs and food donations for the Falcon Archers JOAD Tournament, Jan 18-20.  As a reminder, all families are required to work one of the volunteer slots during our tournament, and to donate one food item for each archer.  Extra work or donations are definitely appreciated!

The signup pages are accessible from the “Signups” tab on the website, or directly from these links:

Sign up for Falcon JOAD Tournament Jobs   Please note that some spots are intended for our archers (the 50/50), and some for coaches.

Sign up for Food Donations

Our JOAD Tournament is the main fundraiser for our JOAD program, and we need everyone to pitch in.  Thank you in advance for helping to make it a success!

Upcoming Events

The Falcon JOAD Christmas Party will be on December 15th.  We will not do the normal kitchen donations that day — instead, JOAD will provide a sandwich ring, and everyone is invited to bring a treat to share.  Cookies, cupcakes, buffalo dip — whatever you’d like to bring.
There is a mini workday THIS SUNDAY, December 2nd at noon.  Some members will be restuffing the bales, but we also need to glue up a bunch of 40 cm single spot targets.  Since JOAD is probably the biggest consumer of those targets, it would be appropriate if we showed up to help.  Wear old clothes!  If you have some old latex paint to use as the glue, bring it along.  SUNDAY at NOON!

Falcon JOAD Shirts Available

We are ordering new Falcon JOAD shirts for this year, and wanted to give parents an opportunity to buy extras (for themselves or for their archers)  The shirts are a Sport-Tek Contrast Performance Polo in black and gray.  They will look like this:

Shirts cost $32 each, adult sizes XS through XL.  For 2X, 3X, or 4X, add $2.50, $3.50, or $4.50 respectively.

Remember that each archer will be receiving one shirt.  If you want an extra, you MUST have the size and payment turned in THIS SATURDAY by the end of practice.

Gold-n-Grain Line Times

The line times for Gold-n-Grain are now posted.  You can reach them from the website (Look for the “Assigned Line Times” link in the side bar), or directly from this Assigned Line Times Link.  Keep that handy — all times will be posted on that SAME LINK as they are received.

There WILL be practice this weekend (November 24th) and on every Saturday in December.  If you can’t make it, just be sure to  notify Cathy Brown via email – blueapis@msn.com.

Have a friend who is curious about your archery interests?  Consider inviting them to the Falcon’s Intro To Archery class, the first Friday of every month at 7:00 PM.  The next one will be held on December 7th.  Equipment and training are provided, and they get 2 hours of shooting time for $10!  (You can come along and show off, if you want).
