Archer of the Year Info

We haven’t talked about this much, but qualifying is underway for Archer of the Year (formerly “Shooter of the Year”). Here are the basics:

All archers in Western PA JOAD groups are included in the competition. Scores from each JOAD tournament are accumulated, with the top 6 scores for each archer being added together. Then the top 6 scoring archers in each category are invited to a shoot-off to determine the Archer of the Year. These are the categories:

  • Male Recurve U13 and U15 combined
  • Female Recurve U13 and U15 combined
  • Male Recurve U18 and U21 combined
  • Female Recurve U18 and U21 combined

  • Male Compound U13 and U15 combined
  • Female Compound U13 and U15 combined
  • Male Compound U18 and U21 combined
  • Female Compound U18 and U21 combined

  • Male Fixed Pins U13 and U15 combined
  • Female Fixed Pins U13 and U15 combined
  • Male Fixed Pins U18 and U21 combined
  • Female Fixed Pins U18 and U21 combined

This year the shoot-off will be held at NSSA on Saturday, April 6th. The shoot-off will be a bracket, similar to the way we did our shoot-off last week at practice. The specifics of the scoring look like this:

In the match-play competition, archers will shoot three-arrow ends. The total score of each end from each archer will be matched. The high-score holder gets 2 points for winning that end, while the loser gets 0. A tie results in a 1-1 split. The match winner is the one who earns six points first. If there’s a tie at the conclusion of five (5) ends, then there’s a one-arrow shoot-off. The winner is the archer with the arrow closest to the center.

Announcements / Lancaster Classic

  1. Crowfoot times are available from the website.
  2. With the Charleroi tournament being cancelled, the Three Rivers Classic is moving to that weekend — March 24th. The Three Rivers Classic is held at Crowfoot, and adults and youth can shoot it together. It’s run in a standard JOAD format. If you are a mom, dad, or grandparent who shoots, it’s great to go and shoot WITH your kid(s) at the Three Rivers Classic! More info when it becomes available.
  3. If you’re a mom or dad who doesn’t shoot, why not take the Intro to Archery at Falcon Archers, and change that? You don’t know what you’re missing.
  4. This weekend is the Lancaster Classic, so this is my yearly admonition to WATCH GOOD ARCHERS, it will improve your shooting! You can watch live on Lancaster Archery’s YouTube channel. They will live-broadcast the qualifying rounds on Thursday and Friday, but what you really want to see is the Shoot-Up. The Schedule is below. It’s ALL fabulous, but I especially recommend watching your discipline — Recurvers watch “Women’s Recurve” and “Olympic Recurve” on Sunday ; Fixed Pin watch “Bowhunter”. (And there’s a good chance you’ll see someone from Falcon Archers in the Bowhunter finals).

Shooter of the Year 2022

Scoring for the Shooter of the Year was finally released, and is posted on the website. Falcon JOAD archers Cassie Chappo and Tommy Morneweck have both qualified for the SOY competition, which will be held March 26th at Chieftain Archers. SOY qualification takes the top 6 scores from each archer during the season, and the six shooters in each category with the best average score compete head-to-head in the Shooter of the Year championship match. Congratulations Cassie and Tommy!

Remember to sign up for the PA Indoor State JOAD Championship if you’d like to compete. The western PA half of the championship will be held at Crowfoot Rod & Gun Club on April 9th.

Scores from the last tournament of the season at Charleroi are now posted to the website.

Three Rivers Classic

Information is now posted for the Three Rivers Classic, which is being held at Crowfoot Sportsmen’s Club on Saturday March 19th. There are JOAD level classes, but adults can also shoot alongside their kids, which makes it a fun event for the family. See the flyer for registration information — you will need to self-register, we don’t do that thru the club.

Also posted are the results from the tournament at Bill’s, and times for Coraopolis next weekend.

We have a backlog of awards to distribute this Monday, so try to get to the club on time!

DETAILS about the shoot:

The shooting will start at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 28, 2020 at Beaver Valley Archers.

ALL 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th place shooters will be shooting in the first elimination round.
(The 1st and 2nd place have a bye, so we won’t need a score from them to see if they advance to the semi-finals. They are already advancing.)

Before we start the shooting for the semi-finals, ALL 1st & 2nd place shooters will get (2) practice ends. Then ALL semi-finalist will begin shooting for scores for the semi-finals .

We will be doing A and B lines for the elimination round AND for the semi-finals.
(NOT for the FINALS)

Once we have completed the first elimination AND the semi-finals, we can now go onto the shoot-off for the Shooter of the Year Champions.

WE WILL GIVE ALL FINALIST, (1) ONE PRACTICE END.

The 8 finalist from all the Bowman/Cub classes (male & female, compound and recurve) will be shooting at the same time. They will be shooting on one line.

When they have finished, then all 8 finalists from Cadet/Junior classes will shoot. They, also, will be shooting on one line.

Upon completion of the FINALS, we will be handing out the awards and getting some
information from ALL Shooter of the Year Champions for jackets.

State JOAD Tournament Registration

State JOAD Tournament T-shirt Order Form

We are working on getting a block of rooms reserved for Falcon JOAD at a nearby hotel, so more details about that will be forthcoming.  This tournament is held in conjunction with the PSAA State Indoor Championship, so there is an opportunity for adults or JOAD archers to shoot that, too.  Details on the PSAA website.
