Archery This Weekend

Since there is no local tournament scheduled this weekend, I will be at the clubhouse from 9 AM to Noon this Saturday, if anyone wants to get in some extra practice. Come join me!

This weekend is the Lancaster Archery Classic, and you can watch it live on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/@LancasterArcherySupply/streams

Usually they start streaming Thursday and Friday to show qualifying , but the fun really kicks in with the shoot-down finals. Here is the weekend schedule, with the youth recurve and open (compound) times highlighted.

For Fun: Archery Movies

Okay, there is some great archery in the movies. There is also some terrible archery in the movies. I bet that by now you may be able to tell the difference, but it’s still fun to listen to an expert tell you that you were right!

I won’t spoil for you who has is the BEST archery form (it was a surprise to me!), but I will tell you to listen for this fantastic quote:

The trick is, with archery, you don’t let go of the string. The trick is to try and no longer be holding the string.

Enjoy!

Watch Some Quality Archery

It’s a good idea for developing archers to occasionally watch some really good quality archers do their thing.  I think it’s helpful, while standing on the line, if you are trying your best to LOOK like Brady Ellison or Levi Morgan.  Maybe you can’t quite get the shot off like they can, but you could do a lot worse than trying to mimic their form.

Some of you may not have known that YouTube was streaming the Lancaster Archery Classic over the first weekend of February.  No worries — they have it all saved for you!  Here are two great places to start.

For Recurve shooters, why not watch 13 year-old Casey Kaufhold compete in the Women’s Recurve Finals?  You can pick up the action right here:  https://youtu.be/b6WY2G0nQ-4?t=606

For Compound shooters I would recommend watching the Masters Open Pro Finals:  https://youtu.be/rD_EnlHoFfc  I picked this match because Benton Christensen shoot a trigger release, like many of you.  And it has a very exciting ending!

Consider this archery homework, if you’d like.  At our next practice I will talk to recurve archers about The Flip, and for compound shooters we can discuss the various types of releases, and which one is really the best.
